One of the little known bits of the CROW (Countryside Rights Of Way) act was to introduce a deadline of 2026 to record all historic but unrecorded rights of way onto definitive maps. After 1 January 2026 most pre-1949 paths which have not been recorded on these maps will be lost forever.
There are maybe 20,000 of these, and many may guarantee access to countryside beauty spots. Part of the deal was that there would be adequate funding to ensure that all locatable rights of way are determined before the deadline. Yes, you guessed it, the funding has been withdrawn. So a petition has been introduced to try and get this deadline bit of the act repealed, I recommend wholeheartedly that you sign it.
See our CROW Petition page for the link to the petition.
